INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts were one of the most active teams in the 2013 free agency.
Some of the “bigger” moves came on the defensive side of the ball, with some veteran additions.
Yesterday, Colts.com took a look back on the offensive moves from last season and today we look at the defensive side of the ball.
-2013 Stats: 15 games played (15 starts). 58 tackles, three sacks and one forced fumble.
-Outlook: There are differing opinions on the impact that Walden had in his first season with the Colts. Walden played some of his best football of the year towards the end of the season. Ryan Grigson was pleased with what he saw from Walden in 2013 and the next step is for him to benefit from the extra attention
-2013 Stats: Placed on injured reserve on August 25, 2013.
-Outlook: Looking to a fresh start after four seasons in Atlanta, Sidbury was signed on the first day of the 2013 free agency period. Sidbury was figured to factor into a deep outside linebacker group but an injury late in preseason ended his season. Like
-2013 Stats: 16 games played (7 starts).
-Outlook: Butler made the most of his 11-week “audition” with the Colts in 2012. He has continued to be a ball-hawk corner in Indianapolis. He had four interceptions and 15 pass deflections in 2013. The former second round pick was searching for a home to start the 2012 season and he has certainly found just that in the Colts secondary.
-2013 Stats: 12 games played (12 starts). 96 tackles.
-Outlook: At times in 2013, we saw the physical nature that Landry is known for at the safety position. He was a tackling machine early in the season before a toe injury sidelined him for four weeks. The next step for Landry comes with some more game changing plays. He did not record a sack or force any turnovers in 2013.
-2013 Stats: 10 games played (10 starts). 23 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
-Outlook: Injuries hindered Francois’ development in 2013 but he showed enough flashes to see why the Colts brought him over from San Francisco. Francois has the ability to play multiple positions across the Colts front and is a linchpin of the defensive line moving forward.
-2013 Stats: 16 games played (15 starts). 29 tackles.
-Outlook: As an 11-year veteran, Franklin was brought in to man the nose tackle position along with
-2013 Stats: 5 games played.
-Outlook: After spending the first three months of the season on the Colts practice squad, McNary excelled in limited snaps down the stretch. McNary, who was playing his first games of football since 2010, flourished in a pass rushing role from his inside linebacker position. All signs point to a more expanded role for McNary in 2014.
Outside Linebacker Caesar Rayford
-2013 Stats: Traded to Dallas before the start of the regular season.
-Outlook: Rayford was the star of the Colts 2013 preseason with 11 tackles and five sacks. The Colts traded him to Dallas before the start of the regular season and Rayford finished with five tackles in seven games with the Cowboys. In exchange for Rayford, the Colts received a 2015 conditional draft pick.
-2013 Stats: 2 games played.
-Outlook: The remarkable story of Adongo added another chapter late in the season when he debuted in an NFL game. Adongo played special teams for the Colts in Week 14 and 15 of the season. He has put on significant weight since coming to America and his work ethic has been praised by everyone inside the Colts organization. Now, it’s about Adongo getting some reps on the defensive side of the ball to see if he can maintain a roster spot in 2014.
